PROTECTION AGAINST UV-RADIATION

ROOTS developed garments are the first line of defence against exposure to the thermal hazards of an electric arc, heat, flames, cold, and electrostatic properties. However, our clothing also provides protection against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays as all garments are tested and have a UPF of 50+.

Working class heroes who work in the sun all day are never adequately protected with mere sunscreens or regular workwear. The former needs frequent reapplication to be effective and the latter must be heavy or dark coloured in order to provide any form of protection against UV radiation.

WHAT DOES UPF 50+ MEAN?

UPF, which stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, is a numerical rating indicating how effective garments block ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It applies to a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB radiation. A UPF rating of 25 which in turn means that only 1/25th of the harmful UV radiation ‘can get through’. In other words, only 4% can penetrate the fabric.

Hence, the higher the UPF, the greater the protection. The highest UPF rating that can be assigned to a garment is 50+. It would classify a garment as providing “excellent” protection from UV radiation.

As one may expect, ROOTS garments offer the best in class protection – also against UV radiation. All of our garments are thoroughly tested and awarded with a UPF rating of 50+.
